It’s nearly time for Bottle Feeding Lambs at Cwmcrwth Farm! A very popular farm holiday activity with children and adults alike. Well what’s not to like? Bottle Feeding Lambs is a magical experience and a chance to get up close and have a cuddle.
Lambs are so cute, generally they are small enough to pick up even for toddlers to hold. Their wool is soft to touch and unlike the piglets, they don’t squirm and try to get away. Their gentle baa is unlike the shrill squeal of a piglet. This makes for a fabulous sensory experience for toddlers and preschool children.
Why do lambs need bottle feeding?
Sometimes when ewes have given birth to triplets or twins they cannot produce enough milk to feed all their lambs. We rescue the lambs the commercial farmers do not feel will grow quickly enough. Which means our pet lambs are often very small as they tend to be the runt from groups of triplets and quads. In other words an ideal size for toddlers and young children.
With lots of TLC and regular bottle feeding from our visitors most of our lambs do eventually thrive. Growing into large healthy lambs who give our summer guests a run around the field.
Who can help bottle feed the lambs?
Anyone can help bottle feed lambs. It truly is a family friendly holiday activity. Children, toddlers, adults and even teenagers enjoy grabbing a bottle and choosing their favourite lamb. Then there’s the names. We let our guests help name the pet lambs. Over the years this has resulted in lambs being called Kevin, Mini, Tyrone, Cheeky and Little Al none of which sound very Welsh! But they win a place in our guests’ heart creating memories to take home.
Lambs need to be bottle fed for 6 to 8 weeks after birth so there’s plenty of time to book to come and stay on the farm. Pet lambs are always hungry and need bottle feeding at least twice a day to start with so there’s plenty of opportunity for everyone to have a go.
The lambs are greedy and get very excited at feeding time, running over to the bottles, to guzzle away. As they grow they get very strong too, so be ready to be mobbed and parents may want to help the younger children.
Adults love LAMBS too!
Remember it’s not all about the children. There’s something about the lamb shed which adults find relaxing. Adults are welcome without children and it’s not unknown for adults with children to wrestle the bottle from their grasp! Your life can really be enhanced by bottle feeding a lamb! You’ll be amazed how relaxing it is. Forget meditation and deep breathing techniques, we are convinced all you need is a lamb in your lap and your stresses will disappear!
DATES FOR Bottle Feeding Lambs
This year we hope to welcome the pet lambs to Cwmcrwth Farm just before the Easter Holidays so our bottle feeding lambs activity will start around 23rd March and last until mid May depending on the size and age of the lambs. This means there is plenty of time to plan a visit either for the Easter Holidays, a weekend stay or a Toddler and Preschooler break.
The lambs will be halter trained in May then the children can lead them to the field in the morning to gallop around and nibble the grass.
